A Soothing DIY Milk Bath

After the week I had, I was desperate for some R&R. Besides a good night’s sleep, I needed something to take my mind away from everything that made me want to pull my hair out! Being mom to a one-year-old mixed with a hectic work schedule can get a little crazy, as you can imagine. While I love my little munchkin, mommy needed some quiet time. And what better way to achieve this than with a relaxing and soothing bath.

One of my favorite DIY recipes is a milk bath that includes ingredients that are either inexpensive or already in your pantry. You can whip it up in less than 10 minutes and make a big batch to save for later.

What You’ll Need:

  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 2 cups powdered milk
  • 1/2 cup Epsom salts
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 20 drops lavender essential oil (optional)
  • Blender
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon
  • Sealable container

The lactic acid in milk works as a natural exfoliate, which clarifies, improves texture and hydrates the skin. Because it’s known to reduce wrinkles and diminish the appearances of scars, lactic makes the prefect ingredient for your DIY bath.

First, add oats to a blender and pulse until finely ground. Add the oats, powdered milk, salt and baking soda into a pan. Stir together until clump-free. The powdered milk dissolves in your bath creating a soothing feel in the water.

There are a ton of health benefits tied to Epsom salt but for this milk bath especially, it acts as a stress reliever and relaxes the body. “The magnesium [in salt] helps to produce serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of calm and relaxation,” says SaltWorks.

When I first got in the tub, the water felt a bit grainy because of the salt but the minute my body was submerged in that water, I felt so much better. For an added bonus, I had a couple of scented candles (lavender is my favorite scent) burning in the background, while I sipped on an amazing glass of white wine.

The baking soda works as a detoxifier and leaves your skin oh-so soft. Adding a few drops of lavender essential oil was a personal touch; feel free to use your favorite scent to get the best results.

Again, if you made a big batch that you couldn’t use in just one bath, everything in this recipe is totally safe to store for later. Save in a container with a tight lid. After a 30-minute soak my mind was clear, I felt relaxed and ready to tackle another week.

Guys, I highly recommend you try this milk bath, especially if you’re having the week I had. It’s always a good idea to take some time to unwind. As always, be precautious, if you have sensitive skin, test the ingredients on a small part of your body before soaking in the tub.

  1. Hello Dorcy! I am a classmate of yours, and can I just say that this milk bath sounds absolutely amazing! I am a full time student, nanny to a 4yr old, mom to a crazy 1yr old dog, and a hostess in a bar, so needless to say there are several times I am feeling the need for some “me” time! I love how simple this DIY recipe is, and I am certainly going to try it out this weekend! With that being said, where did you purchase your powdered milk? And can you substitute other natural oils for the lavender in the bath? I love using peppermint and eucalyptus!

    1. I’m glad you liked it, Sydney! You can purchase powered milk from Walmart, they have different brands so feel free to experiment, if you’d like. And yeah, go ahead and experiment with different scents of essential oils. I would warn though, some essential oils aren’t as safe to put on your skin, so do your research. Let me know how it works out!

  2. I seriously loved this. I’m probably going to do it sometime this week. How is your one-year-old? Kudos to you working, going to school and being a mom.
Your steps are super easy to follow. I have really bad eczema, so I think this milk bath will be super beneficial for my skin. Thanks for posting it! 🙂
